Botodachi Privacy Policy
Last Updated: January 2025
Overview
Botodachi is a Chrome browser extension that provides AI-powered
assistance while watching videos on YouTube and Netflix. Your privacy is
important to us. This policy explains what data we collect, how it's
used, and how it's protected.
Key Point: Botodachi stores all settings and data
locally on your device. We do not collect, store, or have access to any
of your personal information.
1. Information We Collect
Botodachi collects and stores the following data
locally on your device only:
-
API Keys: Your API keys for AI services (OpenAI or
Google AI) are stored securely in your browser's local storage. Note:
Ollama (local) does not require API keys.
-
Extension Settings: Your preferences including AI
personality selection, provider settings, and spoiler preferences.
-
Chat History: Recent conversation history (last 10
messages) to provide context for follow-up questions. This is stored
locally and cleared when you navigate to a new video.
-
Video Captions: A rolling buffer of up to 30 minutes
of video captions captured in real-time from your current viewing
session.
2. How We Use Your Information
Data collected by Botodachi is used exclusively to:
-
Provide AI-powered responses to your questions about video content
- Maintain conversation context for natural interactions
- Remember your settings and preferences across browsing sessions
3. Third-Party Services
When you ask a question, Botodachi sends the following to your chosen AI
provider (OpenAI, Google AI, or Ollama):
- Your question
- Recent video captions (context)
- Video metadata (title, platform)
- Recent chat history (for conversation context)
Important: This data is sent directly to the AI
provider you configured. We do not intercept, store, or have access to
this communication. Please review the privacy policies of your chosen AI
provider:
4. Data Storage and Security
-
Local Storage Only: All data is stored locally on
your device using Chrome's secure storage API.
-
No Remote Servers: Botodachi does not operate any
servers or databases. We cannot access your data.
-
API Keys: Stored using Chrome's local storage (not
synced across devices) for enhanced security. Ollama does not require
API keys as it runs locally.
-
Automatic Cleanup: Chat history and caption buffers
are automatically cleared when you navigate to a new video or close
your browser.
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties. The only
data sharing occurs when:
-
You explicitly ask a question, which sends your query and context to
your configured AI provider
-
This is necessary for the extension's core functionality and is under
your direct control
6. User Control
You have complete control over your data:
-
Clear Chat History: Click the "Clear" button in the
extension panel
-
Delete Settings: Remove the extension or clear your
Chrome extension data
-
Disable Extension: Turn off or uninstall Botodachi at
any time from chrome://extensions/
